“We were thrilled when Midwestern University offered to provide crew quarters and a vehicle bay for Medic 155,” said Glendale Fire Chief Mark Burdick. “It’s a win for Glendale Fire, a win for Southwest Ambulance, and a win for the students of Midwestern University.” “Midwestern University students have repeatedly said how valuable an experience the ride-a-longs have been in helping them better understand what occurs before a patient arrives in the emergency room,” said Midwestern University President and CEO Kathleen H. Goeppinger, Ph.D. “By providing a dedicated station on the Midwestern University campus, we look forward to expanding our partnership with the City of Glendale Fire Department along with the benefit to our students.” “Nearly 60% of Medic 155’s observation only ride-a-longs during its first three years went to students and faculty of Midwestern University, allowing them to better understand pre-hospital emergency medical care,” said Jeff Sargent, President of Southwest Ambulance. “Expanding our partnership with Glendale Fire to include Midwestern University truly makes it a national example of a successful educational experience and beneficial public/ private partnership.” Medic 155 is basically a medical triage unit and responds to higher priority medical calls anywhere within the city of Glendale. Upon the unit’s arrival, care that has been started by the crew on the fire engine is seamlessly transferred over to the paramedic and EMT on Medic 155. This allows the engine to return to service, leaving Medic 155 and Southwest Ambulance to facilitate transport to the receiving hospital. Medic 155 began operations in September 2004 under a unique public/ private partnership between the Glendale Fire Department and Southwest Ambulance. The initial pilot program was so successful that training units Medic 157 and 158 have since been added.
