SIXTEEN GRADUATE PARAMEDIC ACADEMY Will Help Alleviate Paramedic Shortage in Pima Co.
(Tucson, AZ April 18, 2007) Sixteen employees graduated from Southwest Ambulance’s Paramedic Academy on April 17. Southwest invited it’s Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to apply for the Academy taught by State certified instructors at Pima Community College. Two of the sixteen graduates work for Rural/ Metro Fire Department. “The program was designed to help alleviate the shortage of Paramedics in Arizona, while rewarding and retaining our dedicated employees, “ said Patrick Sullivan, Division General Manager of Southwest Ambulance in Pima County. “The program allows us to help in the career development and retention of our dedicated employees.” Southwest Ambulance paid all the training expenses for their employees, and paid an hourly wage to the student employees during class hours. The Arizona Department of Health Services certified the course and students receive credits from Pima Community College. While many traditional Paramedic programs through community colleges require 18 months of study, Southwest Ambulance’s Academy condenses the program into 6 months of classroom training and field practicum. The graduates are: • Derrick Brown • Sean Carr • Mike Cassabaum • Clayton Clark • Noel Couch • Randy Creighton • Jenny Fisher • Ryan Hilliard • Daniel Majors • Kellie McKelvey • Dawn Myers • Benjamin Paris • Bill Porter • Candice Tanstaafl • Kari Lynn Sparkman (Rural Metro Fire) • Ryan Best (Rural/ Metro Fire) The graduates take their National Registry EMT exams April 18 and will await their results before they begin working around Pima County as Paramedics for Southwest Ambulance or their sponsoring organization.
