Taking Jacob Out to the Ballgame; Southwest Ambulance and Arizona Diamondbacks Team Up to Give Sick Child a Special Day
(Tucson, Ariz) Southwest Ambulance, the Arizona Diamondbacks are giving 12-year-old Tucson resident Jacob Conover a special day to remember at the ballpark. Jacob, who suffer muscular dystrophy and has limited use of his limbs, will be allowed to meet Diamondbacks players during batting practice before watching the game from team donated seats. Southwest Ambulance will transport Jacob in its new KidZulance ambulance dedicated for kids, and will stay with Jacob the entire time, should they be needed.
Jacob suffers from Duchenne’s, one of the 32 types of neuro-muscular diseases. Jacob was stricken by this terminable disease when he was 3 years old, and has not had the use of any limb since. Jacob is the 2007 MDA Goodwill Ambassador for Arizona
“Hopefully being on the field and meeting players is just what the doctor ordered,” said Patrick Sullivan, Division General Manager of Pima County Operations for Southwest Ambulance. “Our crews are used to seeing people on the worst days of their life. It will be great to see such a big smile on a Jacob’s face.”
Southwest Ambulance arranged the special day with the help of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Tucson Electric Park, and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Jacob’s medical condition allows him to live at home and receive treatment as an out-patient, but a going to the ballgame would not have been possible without all of this special assistance.
