Training
Southwest Ambulance's Training and Education Department is comprised of experienced full-time and part-time instructors serving more than 1200 employees.

The Department's goal is to help our employees succeed both now, and in the future. In addition to re-certification and annual training, the Department has created innovative programs that help keep our employees safe and provide career enhancement opportunities.

Southwest Ambulance Paramedic Academy
The Tucson and Phoenix based in-house academies are offered to Southwest Ambulance EMTs that want to upgrade their certification. The employees are paid hourly during the training, and all expenses are paid. The course is around 1000 hours of classroom and field training.

Re-Certifications
Our training staff teaches refresher/recertification training for Basic EMTs, including no cost CPR training.  We also lead Paramedic refresher/rectification training, including 48 hours of state mandated training for new out-of-state paramedics, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and other special skills.

New Employee Orientation
New Employee orientation is conducted for all new field employees. The training, led by our education department, includes an overview of multiple departments including field, billing and communications.

OSHA
Our training department leads all annual training for all employees including OSHA.

Customer Service Training
Every employee at Southwest Ambulance attended a half-day customer service training program to teach the importance of working together and treating fellow healthcare workers and patients with the highest levels of respect. This program has drawn international attention and is already showing results.

EVADE
ImageAll new field EMTs and employees driving vehicles must complete and pass Emergency Vehicle Advanced Driver Education (EVADE), which incorporates 8 hours of interactive classroom training and about four hours of scored practice and evaluations while driving on a marked course. This training is followed by field experience with the employee driving under the supervision of a trained driver/preceptor for 72 hours. Our EVADE program is considered one of the most effective in the country.
